The reason Eowyn is so inspiring is because she is willing to defy tradition to fight for those she loves; the creation of Tauriel downplays that.

Éowyn and Tauriel come from completely different cultures. What applies to Éowyn in Rohan may not apply to Tauriel. We know little about the culture of Mirkwood in either the books or the film. It’s entirely possible that women there may not be prohibited from taking defense positions if they wish to do so. I don’t see why adding female representation here is offensive, especially in a narrative already devoid of women.

Éowyn is not the first woman in Middle-earth to take up arms in a time of need. Tolkien may not have been the most progressive fellow in terms of gender, but Éowyn certainly isn’t an exclusive outlier in this field. Haleth and her guard of female warriors, Galadriel at Alqualondë, and Idril in the Lost Tales version of the Gondolin narrative are other prime examples.

Ultimately, the position of one female character does not erase the heroism of another.

I’m no huge defender of Jackson and the films, but the intensity of disdain that has been directed at this character is quite frankly reaching pathetic levels. It’s justified to worry about how she’ll be written and portrayed as an original female character — I certainly am — but some of these “concerns” seem rather ill-thought, especially when there isn’t as much balking over Jackson’s much more egregious transgressions.

I was going to make a point about their storylines being entirely different, but given that those are heavily culturally motivated, that is trending into the same direction as Adenydd’s first point. In short - Éowyn defies tradition, yes. Tauriel likely (given the fact that there were more female elf warriors in the preview snippets and it can be assumed without too much strain that movie!Mirkwood permits female presence in their army) upholds it.

Why do people keep thinking of new ways and reasons to hate Tauriel? Geez, it’s reaching a new level of low the closer we get to DoS.

I’m a huge fan of people having opinions and different, arguable opinions. BUT If you put two extra seconds of thought into this, the culture argument alone (an ancient race obviously having more respect for Gender has no bearing on one hundreds of miles away that’s obviously not as progressive…). But god forbid we have another heroic female in a movie that is 99% male.

There is something really fucking ignorant about all the hate.
